First of all, I want you to understand that you deserve to be happy. Situations in life might have impacted the way some of you feel right now, but that doesn’t mean they cannot change. Get ready for a shift so you can help yourself to happiness.

1. A changed mindset

Firstly, there should have a shift in your mindset. I know you’ve heard already how powerful the mind is. Whatever you tell/feed your mind contributes to the way you feel and behave.

Begin to declutter your mind and gather your thoughts – positive ones. Get rid of all the negativity, doubt, fear, unworthiness, and so on.

Do a mind reset and think of all the things you’ve always loved. The things that come naturally to you. You feel connected and so passionate about it/them. Deep down, you know it’s your purpose, your calling. Shift your mindset so you can get ready to do what makes your soul happy.

2. Finding what makes you happy

How do I find things that makes my heart happy?

Maybe it’s an activity that use to bring you great joy but you haven’t done it in a while. Or, maybe you have a passion for something but haven’t gotten around to it.

For instance, paint beautiful drawings, do gardening, write, knit, go fishing, kayaking, play tennis etc.

Whatever the activity, it will keep your mind occupied and your fire blazing. Try to do more of what makes you happy. It might even be a color that makes you happy. Wear it more often.

3. Connect with people that make you feel special

Life happened and some things have changed. Those you were once close to seem far away. Perhaps you are a loner and literally have nobody to talk to. But hey, all hope is not lost.

Analyze the people in your life and connect (or reconnect) with those persons who are genuine, kind, fun to be around, and who leave a positive impact whenever you spend time with them.

Also, be open to cultivating new genuine friendships. Find someone who makes you happy.

4. Explore the world

Traveling and site-seeing can make so much of a difference. I’m happier when I travel, visit new places, or try new things.

Does travel makes you happy? Is it art that makes you feel happy?

Pack your things, go on a road trip, drive across the country, visit somewhere you’ve always wanted, book a flight, go to the museum, rent that RV, become a digital nomad, and go explore.

However, given we’re not all the same, other things might interest you. If chocolate makes you happy or having cheese makes you happy, then grab some. Perhaps you are someone who’ll say ‘music makes me happy’ or ‘painting makes me happy’, or ‘flowers makes me happy’ and so on. Also, giving back and helping others makes you happy too. I love giving.

5. Forget the past

Maybe It’s easier said than done but, look at it this way, some things from the past are wonderful things to remember. They are filled with good memories which you’ll cherish forever. For those things, you want to hold them, dear, to your heart, right?

Now, there are some other things of the past that leave a bad taste in your mouth, and tears in your eyes, drive fear and heartache. Choose to let go of those things and move forward so you can do what makes your soul happy.

    Wow, this is a big one. Why? Because many people hate their jobs for various reasons. Whether it be coworkers, their boss, low pay rate, the tasks, or the work environment itself, that 9-5 is no joke for many. Choosing a career that makes you happy is of utmost important. If you job is interfering with your peace and happiness, there are other ways to make money.

    You can give a few side hustles a try until you can turn your hustle into a full-time income. This is the story of many. At the end of the day, you have to live for you and do what make you happy.

    11. Get out the house a bit

    If you haven’t been out in a while, how about you get out the house a bit. Call your friends/family or anyone you like to hang with. Get dressed, put on some happiness spray, get a drink, laugh, and have a good time.

    If you’re a loner, you can always make new friends or go out by yourself. Going out by yourself can be equally refreshing. Vist the spa, the beach, a cinema, a lounge, etc. It’s all up to you to take time to do what makes your soul happy.

    13. Stop comparing yourself to others

    If you are a person who thinks or utters to yourself “I just want to feel happy again”, then you have to learn to accept yourself. You are unique and there’s only one amazing you. Therefore, do not compare yourself to others.

    Remember, the other person you would be comparing yourself to has their own problems (maybe even bigger than yours) and sometimes things are not as it seems. So love yourself and own who you are.

    What’s a vacation again? The word may sound unfamiliar as you haven’t had one in a while! But, you deserve it. That’s one thing that makes me happy. A vacation or baecation can bring so much joy.

    Another important point in learning to do what makes your soul happy is treating yourself. No need to wait on a gift from someone to buy you a gift. Change the narrative and buy yourself something nice. This is something that makes me happy.

    Sometimes when I’m feeling down, I like to get myself a little something and it changes my mood a lot! It doesn’t even have to be expensive. Make yourself happy. Treat and pamper yourself.

    17. Watch movies that make you laugh

    Comedy does something for me I tell ya. Choose some funny movies to watch on Netflix for a whole month and laugh sadness and boredom away. You can even watch some stand-up comedies on YouTube for free! It’s happy time baby!

    Want a happy soul? You might be holding on to something and it’s weighing you down. Forgive yourself, forgive others, le it go and lighten your heart.

    20. Let go of things you can’t control

    Next on the ‘what makes you happy list’ is to let go of the things you certainly can’t control. This is truly a powerful one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to control everything.

    Those things that are within your reach, go for it. However, those that are not, don’t worry about them, just go with the flow. Let it be because you know what I found out? Things always find a way to work themselves out. Let it go and find what makes you happy.

    21. Spend time with those you love

    Call your mom, dad, best friend, sister, and grandma. Tell them you’re coming to hang out for a day or two. Plan a picnic with the kids. Prepare dinner and invite those who mean the most to you. This makes me so happy!

    22. Do not be a perfectionist

    Yes, please. Get over the idea of being or having everything perfect. The unpredictable is sometimes what makes life amazing, you know.

    When things don’t go according to plan, cut yourself some slack- you tried. Remember, let go of things you can’t control. 

    Also, nobody is perfect. Never try to be. Instead, each day, try to become the best version of yourself.

    23. Be optimistic

    Begin to see the world in a whole new way. Move away from negativity, bad experiences and embrace all things sunny and positive. Try to see the good even in dark situations. Adjust your outlook/perspective.

    Meditation is good for your mental health. Yoga has become a lot more popular than it was back in the day. You can find happiness again by meditating each day. 

    25. Play sports

    A lot of people find that playing their favorite sport makes them extremely happy. If you can’t play it, then watch it and enjoy.

    How to figure out what makes you happy? It starts from within. Do not look to external forces for happiness. Get your mind at the right place, change your outlook on life itself, love yourself unconditionally and let your heart be filled with gratefulness.

    Then, whenever you engage in certain activities, pay attention to the way you feel. Whatever the activity is, might be big or small. Maybe it’s spending time with people in your life, swimming, self care day etc. Connect with your emotions and embrace your feelings. You will begin to identify what brings you happiness.

    When you’ve learned how to find something that makes you happy, you’ll realize that it allows you to feel at peace, ignited, a passion. You wont say, “I don’t know what makes me happy” anymore because you’ve found your safe place.
